Keep Chatham Beautiful Receives The President’s Circle Award For Standards of Excellence

The national organization, Keep America Beautiful, honored Keep Chatham Beautiful with the President’s Circle Award that recognizes affiliates who have exceeded annual “good standing” requirements. Keep Chatham Beautiful qualified for this honor by meeting standards of merit, including conducting the annual Community Appearance Index, which calculates the affiliate’s cost/benefit ratio, collaborating with the community on beautification projects, and offering programs to help end littering, and improving recycling opportunities. This achievement would not have been possible without support of the Keep Chatham Beautiful board and volunteers!
Upcoming Litter Cleanup in Sandfly - Volunteer Opportunity!
A poll survey was conducted to determine the next litter cleanup location for Keep Chatham Beautiful. The poll resulted in many citizens pointing out the Wal-Mart area in Sandfly is in need of our litter patrol. On Saturday, May 6th from 9 AM - 12 PM we will conduct a litter cleanup in Sandfly! This is a great volunteer opportunity and we welcome all! To sign up please email keepchathambeautiful@gmail.com
We will meet at the back of the Wal-Mart parking near McDonald's, volunteers are welcome to stay as long as their schedules allow.
Cannot make it to the cleanup? Organize your own and we can loan the materials needed for a litter cleanup! Additionally, we have quarterly litter cleanups which will occur in June, September, and December. Dates and times to be determined.
Call for board members!
Keep Chatham Beautiful is looking for additional motivated board members to join the team. Board meetings are the first Thursday of the month at 9 AM at the Eisenhower Recycling Center.

Hurricane Matthew

Resiliency has been defined as an occurrence of rebounding or springing back; the ability to recover quickly from depression or discouragement. The aftermath of Hurricane Matthew has absolutely defined the resiliency of the citizens of Savannah-Chatham County. Although the area suffered a great deal of property damage, no lives were lost!
Clean up efforts and debris removal continues to be a priority and officials caution everyone to exercise caution near debris piles. Those piled up on the public right-of-way can be a safety hazard for pedestrians. They can easily obstruct sight-lines for motor vehicles traveling along roadways and may even contain sharp objects such as broken limbs and woody debris, or harbor snakes and pests. We can each share in the recovery by volunteering to assist an elderly or disabled resident clear debris from their yard. Or, gather a group of friends to gather debris in a common public area. Chatham County and its contractors are working diligently to collect debris but, they're always grateful for helping hands.
Through the worse of times, the community spirit is strong and we are getting back to some normalcy after Hurricane Matthew continues. We all know that our community won't magically recover overnight but it will take time. We also know that we will recover. We are, after all, a community of resiliency!
Borrow our recycling bins for your event! If you need recycling for an upcoming event please contact us. You can pick up the bins at the Eisenhower Recycling Center and return them during regular operating hours.
Thanks to the students from Woodville Tompkins for helping clean up Lake Mayer on Saturday, September 17th, because of you six bags of litter were removed!

Yard Sale
Picture this...October 24th, 2016, 7:45 AM! It was a clear, breezy morning with sunshine galore! Worker bees (oh, make that people) were scurrying all over the place in preparation for the big event at 8:00 AM. Then, it happened! The clock struck 8:00 AM and others began to gather. The kick off to the Keep Chatham Beautiful Yard Sale had begun!
People continued to wander into the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center located at 1321 Eisenhower Drive in steady streams during the morning. It was a definite success, with a variety of items being sold from jewelry for .50 to a solid wood table that sold for $25. Of course, there are always those among the crowd that are willing to negotiate with pricing and they were accommodated as well. The sale garnered more than $515 to assist Keep Chatham Beautiful in the promoting greater responsibility for the environment of Chatham County. Unsold items were donated to Old Savannah City Mission and those of a more artistic nature were turned in for store credit at Starlandia (recycled art supply store on Bull Street) to fund future projects.
Keep Chatham Beautiful would like to thank everyone that worked so hard to organize this event and those that volunteered to make it a success. Special thanks to a group of students studying at Savannah State University. They were outstanding in greeting and interacting with the customers that supported the event!
Pictured below: A volunteer from Savannah State wearing the Bag Monster during the yard sale.

Successful Cleanup at Lepageville Cemetery!

What happens when a community works together? Incredible things happen! One such thing happened when members of Keep Chatham Beautiful, the New Hampstead High School Air Force Junior ROTC and residents of Chatham County joined forces to clean up and revitalize the historic LePageville Cemetery. Commissioner James Holmes, who represents Chatham County's District 2 said, "This project has been one of my top priorities since becoming a commissioner. It's incredible to see this happening today and witness today's youth in action. More than 25 bags of litter was collected with over 320 volunteer hours contributed to the campaign.
Built in 1855, LePageville initially served as company housing for African American workers of Savannah, Florida and the Western Railroad Company. The church and remaining homes were razed in 1967. Over 500 individuals my be resting in LePageville Cemetery.

.

Tybee Fort Screven
Keep Chatham Beautiful in collaboration with Tybee Island Historical Society improved a portion of the Fort Screven parking posts. Old paint was removed and posts were straightened and repainted. This project is in progress and will be continued in the fall. If you are interested in helping please email Keep Chatham Beautiful: keepchathambeautiful@gmail.com

We're All Over Chatham County!
Keep Chatham Beautiful (KCB) spearheaded litter patrols in Garden City in the month of April with active assistance from members of the Garden City Police and the Fire/Safety departments. Twenty-seven bags of litter were collected among eighteen volunteers canvassing the Highway 25 (Main Street) and Minus Avenue area!
KCB has also been involved in litter patrols along Victory Drive and the Truman Parkway location, as well as the Sandfly area. Are you interested in joining us on a litter patrol mission? We'll provide litter pickers and vests or t-shirts as well as water. Be sure to wear closed toe shoes and your bright smile. Contact us at the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center located at 1321 Eisenhower Drive or give us a call at (912) 790-1647.

Recycling can be creative and lots of fun!

We've all heard the expression, "one man's trash is another man's treasure." It's true! The recycled items, trash, shown here represented an opportunity for approximately fifty Oglethorpe Academy students to create something new. The students used plastic containers, fabric remnants and discarded books and magazines to create artwork. They thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and were able to appreciate "trash" like they never had before. If you're interested in learning how you can experience this very valuable lesson in recycling, contact Abby Murphy at the Chatham County Recycling Center located at 1312 Eisenhower Drive or contact her at (912) 790-1647.

Is that the “BAG MONSTER?”

His math may be a little bit off target! 1 shopper + 1 year = 500 bags???
Well, when we think about it…every household grocery shopper accumulates about ten grocery store bags each week. So yes, we could potentially end up bringing home 500 or more bags every year! Did you know that it takes 10 – 20 years for plastic bags to decompose?
The bag monster joined Keep Chatham Beautiful (KCB) and the Chatham County Recycling Center for Earth Day in Forsyth Park on April 16th. The event was a wonderful opportunity to provide education against littering, material to support recycling and options to using plastic bags. KCB board members manned a table and conversed with more than 200 potential volunteers. They, in turn, provided their names and addresses as a pledge to become actively involved in alleviating the plight of litter in Chatham County. There were approximately 5,000 people in attendance and most were thrilled to meet the “BAG MONSTER.”

You can recycle your plastic bags at the Chatham County Recycling Center or at most grocery stores.

Resource Conservation Education Center Data Destruction Day
November 14, 2015
9 AM-2 PM

New Logo

Perhaps our biggest change is the creation of a new logo. Our old logo featuring a tall ship at sea was retired and a new logo that incorporates recycling symbols was chosen. A celebratory cake displaying the new logo was made for the Keep Chatham Beautiful Board meeting held in October. Our next Board meeting will be held on November 5th at the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center. These meetings are open to the public and we welcome you to attend!

New Outreach Booth

Keep Chatham Beautiful participated in the Armstrong Volunteer Fair on September 16th. We used this opportunity at Armstrong to not only grow our list of volunteers but to debut our new outreach booth. Cigarette butts and trash collected that morning were used to highlight the need for litter patrols in Chatham County. America Recycles Day stickers, flower seed packets, and cigarette butt holders were given to visitors at our booth.

Keep Chatham Beautiful Celebrates America Recycles Day

Join the thousands of people participating in recycling around the nation! On Saturday morning, November 14th Keep Chatham Beautiful will celebrate America Recycles Day by hosting litter cleanups around Chatham County and recycling as much trash collected as possible. Locations will include Wilmington Island, Tybee Island, and Quacco Road off Hwy 17. Click to sign up and volunteer at one of these locations.
What is missing from this photo? You are! Join us for our next litter cleanup event and make a difference in just one day.

Bag Monster® Reveal at Skidaway Marine Science Day

On Saturday, October 24th, Keep Chatham Beautiful participated in Skidaway Marine Science Day annually held at the University of Georgia Skidaway Institute of Oceanography. It was our first time participating in this event and we came prepared with the big reveal of the Bag Monster®. Five hundred plastic bags were collected from the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center to create a monster representing an average American's use of grocery bags. The response was positive and made attendees of Skidaway Marine Science Day consider their daily actions and use of plastic bags. Additionally, attendees received information on our upcoming events and options on volunteering.

What should you do with your plastic bags? Recycle them at your local grocery store or bring them to the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center. Practice plastic bag reduction by bringing reusable shopping bags whenever you shop.

The Bag Monster® was born from ChicoBag inventor, Andy Keller.

SCAD Students Visit Resource Conservation Education Center

On the week of October 5th two Fiber Arts classes from Savannah College of Art and Design toured the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center to learn more about the center and collect materials for art pieces. The SCAD students gathered everything from computer parts to vacuum hoses. The artwork they create for their Fiber Arts class will be displayed at Gallery F.A.R. (Fine Art of Recycling) located in the resource center.  Free tours for classes or individuals are conducted at the Resource Conservation Education Center upon request.

Bring your old electronics and sensitive paper documents! WSAV, Shred-It, and Chatham County are partnering to help protect residents from identity theft by providing on-site shredders for sensitive paper documents. The shredded documents will be recycled. Goodwill will be on site collecting electronics.

*Note the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center regularly collects electronics to be recycled, but for this special event Goodwill will be accepting electronics.

Updates to Resource Center

The Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center has recently updated their sign! This upgrade is attention grabbing and makes the Resource Center more visible to traffic. The sign will be consistently updated with information about the Resource Center and future litter cleanups held by Keep Chatham Beautiful.

Additionally, a beautification project at the Chatham County Resource Conservation Education Center began this summer. This project was a collaboration between Coastal Georgia Master Gardeners and Keep Chatham Beautiful. Everyone's hard work transformed the surrounding garden beds of the center into a lush landscape for butterflies and bees. Next time you stop by the resource center take a moment to enjoy the new landscape!
